Morning Skincare Routine
Hope everyone's 2018 is off to a great start! This first week back at work is always extra exhausting...it's like you have to retrain your brain to think for more than a few minutes a day. During the time off, I caught up with friends, saw a few movies, spent a whole lot of time on the couch, and posted this makeup tutorial. It was created with NYE in mind, but it's really perfect for any time you're looking to get a little glam. What I didn't mention in the post was that I prepped my skin before I started applying makeup.
So what does that mean?
I have a really simple morning skincare routine. On weekends, I'll often go run errands makeup-free. However, when I do wear makeup, it's important that my skincare wears easily underneath (i.e. doesn't ball-up or flake-off when makeup is applied over it).
- Cleanse: I don't want to strip my skin, but I do want to remove any traces of overnight skincare and create a clean canvas for makeup. Glossier's Milky Jelly Cleanser is perfect for this. I've talked about it a ton (here and here). Also, Ole Henriksen recently sent me the Wonderfeel Double Cleanser to try, and I've reached for it a number of times since. I'm obsessed with the delicious scent! Seriously, you'll want to keep applying more because it smells so good. More importantly, it feels very nourishing. The great thing about both of these cleansers is that they are super gentle but also thorough enough to remove makeup. They're the same cleansers I use in the evening.
- Treat: For daytime, I'm looking for a lightweight serum that absorbs quickly and brightens my skin. Ole Henriksen's Truth Serum is my current daily pick. It improves hydration, gives a needed boost of vitamin C, and it made my list of top beauty products of 2017.
- Moisturize: Well moisturized skin is the key to having makeup sit evenly. My dry winter skin is loving Glossier's Priming Moisturizer Rich. I'm still surprised that such a rich moisturizer works so well under makeup. Looking for something a bit lighter? Ole Henriksen's Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer is great too.
If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of these two skincare lines. So it's no surprise that I was very excited when Ole Henriksen also sent over the brand new Banana Bright Eye Crème complimentary to test. The verdict? It's a great moisturizer, but it's not exactly as advertised. A quick scan through social media (assuming you're a skincare dork like me) would have you believe that this new eye cream will magically erase the dark circles under your eyes...it won't. It's not a concealer, and it's not pigmented like the advertising suggests. However, it has a really nice consistency, and it sits well under makeup, making it a good daytime moisturizer. It's hard to find an eye cream that won't cause makeup to slide right off. Just don't mistake this for a primer. If you apply concealer on top, you'll still want to follow-up with your usual routine to prevent creasing (e.g. set it with a finishing powder).
- Protect: This is the most important step! I won't get up on my soapbox for long, but skin cancer is a big deal, and you should check out the facts for yourself. I don't care if it's the beginning of January and absolutely freezing outside, you still need sun protection. Not only is it a healthy habit to get into, but you'll thank yourself when you look in the mirror years down the road. My current go-to is the CeraVe Skin Renewing Day Cream with SPF 30. The main active ingredient is zinc oxide, so you do have to put a teeny-tiny bit of effort into rubbing it in, but it's not greasy like most sunscreens, and it has a matte finish. It's also formulated with retinol, so it has added anti-aging benefits.
What's your morning go-to skincare?
I received the Wonderfeel Double Cleanser, Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer, and Banana Bright Eye Crème c/o Ole Henriksen for sampling purposes, but all opinions are my own.
