All About That Base

I love to experiment with new products, but there are always those special few that I keep going back to over and over again. You know, those items in your makeup bag that set the standard for everything else. For me, Dr. Jart's Premium Beauty Balm is one of those products. So many people (and makeup companies) confuse tinted moisturizers for beauty balms, but they are not the same. Beauty balms actually make your skin better for wearing it.  I tried a bunch before finding this one, and I haven't looked back since. One swipe of this stuff, and I can tell it's doing good things for my skin. I often use this balm in place of foundation. It provides a light coverage with SPF 45 (bonus!), and the sunscreen in the formula is mineral based (double bonus!). My test for foundations is generally whether or not little lines show through when I rub it on the back of my hand. If the lines are there, then I know it's going to settle unnaturally into my pores. This balm leaves such a smooth, healthy-looking, line-free finish! It can be a bit shiny on it's own, but a good primer fixes that right up. My go-to is this one by Smashbox. The major downside to this beauty balm is that it only comes in two shades. They really need to make a wider range so that more people can enjoy it.

And it would be careless of me to talk about any face base without mentioning my favorite sunscreen. Skincare is uber important to me, and sun protection is right up there at the top. Yes, the Dr. Jart beauty balm has SPF, but I have another sunscreen that I'm obsessed with and wear everyday...even on my no makeup days. It's the Paula's Choice Resist Super Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30. This stuff is the bomb. Talk about multi-tasking products...this is a sunscreen packed with antioxidants. It has a slight tint, but that's really just to counteract the zinc oxide. Don't let the zinc fool you though, this sunscreen doesn't leave any white cast. It also doesn't smell like sunscreen! But the truly amazing thing about this sunscreen is that it dries down matte. It's like this incredible un-makeup face shield that keeps you looking young (#winning).

My everyday routine is to use the Paula's Choice sunscreen, followed by the Smashbox primer, followed by the Dr. Jart beauty balm, and topped with a tiny bit of power (I go with this one from Urban Decay). And there you have it... the perfect base for any makeup (or no-makeup) day!
